SEIU Creates Separate Healthcare Union

It was announced on Monday that Dennis Rivera, head of the New York-based 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, is stepping down from his position to take over as chair of a new national health care union within the Service Employees International Union.

Long term care organizations have become very familiar with the SEIU in the past three years, particularly in the Midwest. Organizing campaigns have sprouted up in rural communities in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio particularly. Long term care has fought back by proactively educating their currently employees on Union policies, dues, and experiences through both anecdotal evidence and Nationally produced inservice videos.

SEIU Healthcare hits the ground running with one million members. Their new leader stated that he foresees opportunities to double that.
