This surveyor guideline interpretation came written from one of our Indiana State Department of Health surveyors. While you should check with your own surveyors if not in Indiana, this is certainly a solid interpretation from a good source on an ambiguous topic:
"There is no rule or regulation to prohibit use of electric blankets.
"However, use of an electric blanket must be supervised to prevent
accidents. If an electric blanket is used surveyors will check the
following:
*Physician's order for length of application and temperature setting
*Policy and Procedure regarding resident safety assessment, monitoring
system, criteria for use and prohibition, *Documentation of application
and removal of blanket
*Following manufacturer's recommendation
*Initial and periodic maintenance check
"The facility assumes liability for use of the electric blanket."
